Mike Pieck, PhD, Small Business Program Director, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health
Mike Pieck is the Small Business Program Director at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, where he manages NHLBI’s $110 million/year Small Business Program. He is also involved in developing support activities for early translational research and entrepreneurship training. Dr. Pieck previously worked at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) where he focused on technology transfer commercialization outcomes. During his time at NIAID, Mike served as an Embassy Science Fellow at the Laboratório de Imunopatologia Keizo Asami (LIKA)-at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Recife where he worked to promote bi-lateral research collaboration with an emphasis on Zika/infectious disease and the translation of academic discoveries into product development projects. Prior to joining the NIH, Mike worked as a life-science consultant where he designed and implemented biomedical business start-up challenges featuring federally funded inventions. Dr. Pieck received his PhD in molecular biology from Boston University and completed his postdoctoral training at the USDA’s Emerging Fungal Pathogen Laboratory where he led a research program focused on the diagnosis and detection of wheat blast ( brusone do trigo).
