Luis Carlos Ferreira, Director, Institute of Biological Sciences of the University of São Paulo (ICB-USP)
I am a specialist in the field of Vaccine Development and microbial pathogenesis. Presently, I am a full Professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) and Head of the Laboratory for Vaccine Development Microbiology of the Department of Microbiology since 2000. I am also the dean of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of USP (2017- 2021), coordinator of Vaccine Research Core Group, member of the directory board of the Startup incubator of USP and director of the USP-Institute Pasteur research platform. I am also involved with innovation and entrepreneurship programs at USP and member of Bioeconomy commission of Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo. My scientific career involved training at the Center for Vaccine Development of the University of Maryland (Baltimore), Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology at Tufts University (Boston), Institute Max Planck for Development Biology (Tuebingen, Germany), Institute of Genetics, University of Bayreuth (Bayreuth, Germany). The
present scientific focus of my group is focused on the development of active immunotherapeutic strategies for tumors induced by papillomavirus and the development of different vaccine approaches against flaviviruses with emphasis to dengue virus and zika virus. I have also established a company, together with students and scientists of my team, for the development of anti-tumors vaccines and their testing under clinical conditions.
